Scalp Micropigmentation for Women: Can Women Have SMP?

  • Post published:April 17, 2023

Lush and healthy hair is often associated with beauty, femininity, and youthfulness. However, for women experiencing hair loss or thinning, it can be a source of insecurity and stress. Hair loss can also affect a woman’s self-esteem, making her feel less confident and attractive. Fortunately, scalp micropigmentation (SMP) can be a great option for women looking to restore the appearance of a fuller head of hair.

What Is Scalp Micropigmentation?

Scalp micropigmentation is a non-surgical hair restoration procedure that involves depositing tiny dots of pigment on the scalp to mimic the appearance of hair follicles. The procedure is performed using a specialized instrument and pigment that matches your hair color. SMP can be used to create the illusion of a full head of hair, fill in thinning areas, or cover scars on the scalp. One of the best things about SMP is that the results are immediate and can last for several years with proper aftercare. It requires practically no downtime after sessions.

Can Women Have Scalp Micropigmentation?

Absolutely! Scalp micropigmentation is a suitable option for women who are experiencing hair loss or thinning due to a variety of reasons, such as age, genetics, hormonal changes, or medical conditions like alopecia. Women who are not ideal candidates for hair transplant surgery may also find SMP to be a more practical solution. SMP can be customized to match your skin tone and hair color, creating a remarkably natural-looking result.

At Ahead Ink, we specialize in restoring the hairline and a full head of hair with SMP. That’s all we do, and we have certified SMP technicians who have a wealth of experience doing SMP and a long list of satisfied clients.

Does SMP Work for Women?

Yes, SMP can work for women, but it’s important to manage your expectations. While SMP can create the appearance of a fuller head of hair, it’s not a replacement for actual hair. SMP is a cosmetic solution that mimics real hair follicles and we can use SMP to create depth in thinning areas making it look fuller.

Women with longer hair may find that SMP blends better with their natural hair if they keep it at a shorter length. Additionally, SMP requires periodic touch-ups to maintain its appearance, typically every four years or even longer. Meaning, you’ll only be visiting us once or twice in 4 years for maintenance or touch-ups.

SMP Aftercare

Proper aftercare is essential to achieve the best results from SMP. Immediately following the procedure, you should avoid washing your scalp for 2-3 days to allow the pigments to settle. After that, it’s important to wash the scalp daily using a gentle shampoo and avoid scrubbing the scalp or using hot water.

You should also avoid exposing the scalp to direct sunlight for at least four weeks after the procedure and wear a hat or apply sunscreen if you must be outside. Try to avoid picking or scratching at the treated area to prevent scarring and pigment loss. You should also put off swimming or going saunas for two weeks after the procedure to prevent the pigments from fading.
